Notes from NOES 2005

We finished another great annual meeting, the fifteenth since it all began as "The Great Western."  In spite of a hurricane forming south of us, that old NOES magic was still working: a great venue and good weather.  On Wednesday, after two days of torrential rains, we had a full scientific program ready to go, facing the distinct possibility that the entire meeting would be washed out.  Gilles Gagnon the Director of Golf reported that satellite images showed cloud cover from Miami to Venezuela. Anyway, we decided to forge ahead with the competition. Lo and behold . . . . it stopped raining! Three days later another vintage NOES meeting was in the bag.

The Meeting At A Glance:

Joe Abate and Billy Bryan beat the bushes and shook out 29 talks from our members and sponsors.  There were sensational presentations of cutting-edge technology, with discussion by master surgeons.  The morning and late afternoon sessions had superb attendance and the forum left a lot time for optional activities.

Speaking of those activities . . . Teeth of the Dog and Dye Fore were spectacular.  We teed up a memorial ball into the ocean for Michael on the #15 at The Dog, which brought back somber and good memories.  Steve Jordan created a few new ones eagling a 425 yard Par 4 and going on to win the Lawhon Cup.  He got the crystal trophy, and the ability to donate $1000 dollars to the charity of his choice.  He chose Esperanza in the Dominican Republic.

Esperanza is a charitable organization that helps the poor of the Dominican Republic obtain health care and pull themselves out of poverty.  Member of the NOES Board spent a morning at Clinica Esperanza Y Caridad in San Pedro.  Through a special pharmacy program we donated $10,000 of antibiotics and medication to the clinic.  Esperanza's Director, Carlos Sanchez, spoke to us at Case De Campo that evening.  Their email address is cpimental@eird.net and their mailing address is:

Esperanza
Calle Juan de Morfa
No. 67, Villa Consuelo
Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana

I promised to put this information in our letter because several NOES members wanted to donate and some Sponsors spoke of matching NOES $2000 cash gift that night to Esperanza.

Speaking of our Sponsors, we should all thank them for the educational grants that make our meeting possible.

Pat Smith did a great job as Golf Captain.  Every member played with someone new each morning, and then hooked up with old friends in the afternoon.  Several afternoon sporting clays were available for a challenge.

The awards were great.  Sharing the Andre Award this year were Champ Baker for his decades of dedication to teaching and research and Les Cross of dj Orthopedics for his support through thick and thin.  A new award was created--the Chairman's Cup--given to a company that distinguished themselves in education and service.  This year, Smith and Nephew Endoscopy was chosen.  They have repeatedly supported education and charitable service in Vietnam and around the world.

So where to next?

The Grove near London (www.thegrove.co.uk) is next year's venue, May 7-13, 2006.  The resort is built around a refurbished 17th century manor with state-of-the-art conference facilities.  One location means less time traveling on the road.  That translates into more time for scientific discussion and an opportunity to enjoy the best in and around London.  The Grove course will host the American Express World Championship in September 2006.  Top 100 courses Wentworth, Sunningdale, and Walton Heath are all in the neighborhood.  Forty-eight NOES members and guests have already signed up.  We can probably take 60, so get in early or read about what you missed in the next letter!

See you in London, old chum!
